Dear Prospective Band Parent/Guardian,
Welcome to the Northwinds Homeschool Band!!
The Northwinds Homeschool band is preparing to start its 2017-2018 season, and I would like to invite your child(ren) to come join the band. The band program has grown tremendously over the last fifteen years, from its humble beginnings of 10 students to over 60 members. It is hard to believe that the group has now trained nearly 200 homeschool musicians, and has logged over 100 performances locally, at retirement facilities, such as St. Andrew’s Place, Sherwood Manor and Parkview, at community events, such as the Festival of Trees, the Fourth of July Parade in Port Angeles and the Clallam County Fair; at Band Festivals in Ellensburg, WA, Moscow, ID, Vancouver, WA, and Abbotsford, BC, and on Tour at Silverwood Theme Park ID, Disneyland Theme Park, CA and Washington D.C.
The Northwinds Homeschool Band currently has four different ensembles: three concert bands and a jazz ensemble. Band is offered at three different levels: beginning, intermediate, and advanced. Beginning band starts with the very rudiments of the instrument. Although previous experience with music (such as piano, recorder, guitar, etc.) is always helpful, it is not necessary. Many of our students have been successful with no previous experience at all. The beginning class starts at the very beginning, and teaches all aspects of reading music notation as a part of the curriculum. Children are usually ready to start band at about age 10, or possibly a little earlier if they are reading well, have prior music experience, or have a musician as a parent.
Band starts on Monday, September 25th at the First Baptist Church , Port Angeles (between 5th & 6th on Laurel). The first day of beginning band will be an orientation meeting for all prospective band students and their parents. This class is particularly important for new students. Help with instrument selection and acquisition will be given the first day of class (September 22nd). Options for rental and purchase of student level instruments will be presented. In addition, Northwinds does have a limited stock of instruments for those who cannot afford purchase or rental. The band director is very happy to help with any questions you may have regarding instrument selection and acquisition, so feel free to call. Students will need to acquire their instrument by the second week of class. Used instruments should be checked and repaired by this time as well. Since Northwinds does not meet every day as in public school programs, class time is precious. Students who don’t have an instrument, or whose instrument is not working in the first several weeks quickly fall behind.
Please feel free to contact the band director if you have any questions or need any help with instrument selection or acquisition.
See you on September 25th at First Baptist Church, Port Angeles.
